I *Heart* Bac-Out

This post has been a year in the making, hence the pictures! But I couldn't go without sharing how awesome Bac-Out is!

I originally started using it on my diapers. Bac-Out is awesome for stains and stink. Because it is an enzymatic cleaner, it actually breaks down (or I like to think of it as "eats") the source of stains and odors. With cloth diapers, Bac-Out is extremely useful when sprayed on diapers as they go into the pail (so it can work while they sit), or just squirted directly into the wash (a little goes a long way, and it does get sudsy!).

I used Bac-Out primarily for laundry purposes for a few years. Then (cue "Jaws" theme song) we got mice. :( The memories those months left me with make me feel ill!! I mean, I'm a country girl, born and raised...and out here it's not like mice aren't all.over.the.place. But they do NOT belong in my house, so dealing with them was a nightmare. However, I won't spend a bunch of time whining about how miserable it was...instead, I wanted to share another reason Bac-Out is so awesome. After we got rid of the mice, we still had that lingering....um...rodent smell? (Oh goodness, that makes me feel so gross and dirty describing my home that way!!) It was mostly in our kitchen (even worse!) since that's where the root of our problems were (behind our cabinets, and eventually, our STOVE! Which, when discovered, we went out and replaced immediately!). But the smell was coming from the wood in our cabinets. Cleaning, even with bleach, wasn't eliminating the smell, and I knew "odor eliminating" sprays didn't REALLY "eliminate" the problem.

I don't know why it took me so long to think of Bac-Out! But as soon as it occurred to me that Bac-Out works perfectly on organic substances, I opened all my cabinets and sprayed directly onto the wood. Within a half hour I had COMPLETELY and PERMANENTLY eliminated that awful scent. Brilliant stuff, I tell ya!

The other time Bac-Out has come to my rescue is with our brand new mattress. We saved up for a few years to buy a nice king size mattress (we are a co-sleeping family so babies stay with us for the first year or two...and some nights we end up with all three kiddos in our bed! Precious times, though...). When we finally were able to afford one, I went out and bought a waterproof cover, because since we DO have little ones in our bed, I didn't want to encounter any...er, bedwetting. (eek!) I mean really, how do you CLEAN a mattress? You can only scrub the surface, but what soaks down inside is there forever. Gross. Grooooooss.

Well, the waterproof cover was miserable. (Now almost 2 years later I realize it was worth the money to buy a more expensive one!!) So I went and got a regular mattress pad specifically made for our mattress that was "supposed" to be fairly waterproof. After all, our kids potty train early (thanks EC!) and pretty successfully (only a handful of night accidents between the two girls), and we hadn't had one on the bed yet! The joke was on me, though. I believe it was within the next night or two that my 18 month old (at the time) had a nighttime accident. Ugh. It soaked right through into my mattress.

You can bet I was a little freaked out about what this would do to our new mattress, considering it was probably going to last us for, well, as long as I can imagine into the future. LOL So I reached for my beloved Bac-Out and thoroughly saturated the area...in about 30 minutes, the stain AND the smell were both gone.

Warning...the following pictures are of a urine spot on a mattress. If that bothers you, well...need I just just don't look? ;)

The mattress before....

The mattress 30 minutes after...so still a little moist which is why it still looks slightly discolored in the picture, but dried as if nothing had ever happened!

Bac-Out has also saved my carpet more than once!! The greatest time was a dark, SET IN coffee stain! (we have light carpet...terrible idea for a farmhouse!) My sweet hubby "forgot" to mention the spill but had tried to clean it up with carpet cleaner after it happened. He wasn't very successful, but since the stain was hidden between a chair and a table, I didn't notice for probably about a month. Thankfully Bac-Out has no time limit and went to work quickly...and yes, the stain DISAPPEARED!

What more can I say? I love the stuff, and highly recommend it!!

Awesome post, I have heard great things about it! It may be just the thing I need so Olivia doesn't get diaper rash if I switch back to cloh for her.

Looks like good stuff. I dont think we can get it over here though. I'm not finding the cleaning products I like over here much.

Yes, I know just what's it like to have a child wet the bed. Yuck! I am very interested in this because it's so unappealing to see that stained yellow mattress!!

I got a chuckle out of reading how nasty you feel with mice in the house. You sound like my kind of lady. :)
