In my recent post about cloth pads, a.k.a. "mama cloth" (make sure you check it out, there's a giveaway!), I mentioned I also use the DivaCup. I have always struggled with a heavy flow that often kept me from going about life "normally." Before I had my eyes opened to the risks of disposable menstrual products, I thought that super absorbent tampons coupled with super absorbent pads was the answer.Eventually I began to hear great things about menstrual cups. Of course, in my mind, menstrual cup meant something along the lines of an "Instead Cup," which I'd tried and concluded were awful. As I heard more about the DivaCup, I realized it was not the same as the Instead Cup. When I finally bought my own, I was happy to see that the DivaCup was, in fact, quite unique! The structure of the DivaCup wasn't floppy and flimsy (or prone to mess) like the Instead Cup, nor was it as difficult to insert and remove. Not to mention the benefit of having size options to best fit a woman's needs! There is a bit of a learning curve in inserting it correctly and comfortably, and there were many times in the beginning where I needed to remove it and try again.
I have now been using the DivaCup for 5 years. I've found it to be the only way I can confidently go about my day (particularly out and about) without worrying that I might have some "leaking" issues. On my heaviest days I still find that I'm more comfortable wearing a pad or pantiliner in combination with the DivaCup, but I rarely actually NEED that backup. There have been times where I've had some issues but they have always been due to me either not having inserted it correctly or not removing it soon enough.
The DivaCup is easy to clean between uses, and they also have a DivaWash available (though I just use a mild soap). The cup is recommended to be replaced every year, but I have used mine for longer and don't have any issues. I do "treat" myself to a new one after each baby, though. ;)
I have not used the DivaCup postpartum as it is not recommended, and I am more comfortable just sticking to pads after that anyway.
The DivaCup is latex-free, BPA-free, and plastic-free! There are no dyes, colors, or additives. It is comfortable, reliable, clean and easy to use, and can be worn for up to 12 hours at a time! Isn't it great to know that such a necessary product is not only safe for YOU, but safe for the environment as well??

Diva cups are great and one of the most common/easiest to find in the U.S. But I recommend anyone considering a menstrual cup do their research. I found a couple of great sites reviewing 10 or 12 different menstrual cups. I ended up using the Lunette for my own use (though I haven't had a chance to use it much yet.)
I learned about different options, and obstacles, for women in developing countries regarding menstruation. It was interesting reading for sure!
Not an entry attempt, just wantedto share-I love the Diva Cup! I remember trying Instead Cups BRIEFLY and being horrified when I almost made an unfixable mess of myself at work. I never really liked tampons, especially after learning more about them.

I'd be interested in trying the DivaCup. Learned that the menstrual cup first started in the 30's, then a mom & daughter re-started the fad in early 2000's.

So funny, I bought one of these the same month that I found out I was pregnant! Some time in the next two years or so I plan to try it out.
very interesting to find out that the first cup was invented in the 30's. I am glad that the concept though gone through it's challenges is still here and available through Diva Cup. I look forward to trying one, hope I win!!

I learned that most women spend $150-200 U.S. a year on disposable tampons and pads. ...Wow! Using The DivaCup would really be a significant savings.

I found this quote most interesting “Not every woman can afford a hybrid car nor easily convert their home to solar power. Yet, by choosing to use a menstrual cup instead of disposable tampons and pads, any woman is able to make an environmentally responsible choice each month. This is no small matter. In the U.S. alone, billions of tampons and pads are dumped into landfills and the environment each year.” Carinne Chambers To see how far the menstrual cup has come along is great, since i am allergic to latex I love the fact that the diva cup is LATEX FREE

I learned that cups were created in the 1930s
I learned that the difference between my current menstrual cup and the diva cup is that the DC is made of silicone, whereas the one I want to replace with a divacup is made of latex. I was also blown away to hear some of the precise numbers on savings (such as $100/year... and I think the savings can be even greater if you are replacing organic tampons, which I did), and numbers on the amount of garbage prevented by menstrual cups.
Thanks for the give-away!
