I have had a lot of requests for our homemade toothpaste. This is one that I make a batch of every couple of weeks, and it keeps well in a jar on the bathroom counter. We have been using this for several years as part of our teeth remineralizing routine, which we have had a lot of success with. Not perfect, by any means, but HUGE difference from when we were using commercial toothpastes.
The purpose of this toothpaste (for our family) is to get their teeth/gums/mouth clean, provide essential cell salts, oxygenate the teeth and mouth, and contribute to proper oral flora. The latter is one of the big reasons I believe at least one of my children struggles so much with his baby teeth- because he wasn't colonized well at birth. It's something we've been working on ever since, and I think that using oral probiotics as part of our dental routine (to supplement what he takes otherwise) has been very beneficial. But in general, my kids have the same baby teeth my husband and I had- weak and susceptible to cavities. I have an allergy to fluoride (no kidding- I get a rash around my mouth that lasts for weeks until after I stop using it, and my blood tests have concurred), and I see similar patterns in my children, so aside from the negative aspects of fluoride, we avoid it for that reason too. This recipe was just an experiment for a long time, and I continually modify it as I learn more.
Keep in mind this is not a quick fix. For me, sometimes this feels overwhelming and I just want to say "Forget it!!" You'll probably be thinking "She seriously does this every day?"...because *I* think that!! But I've seen the difference between the times we care for those little teeth consistently as opposed to when we simply just brush, floss and swish. So, without further ado....
Disclaimer- I am not a medical professional recommending a treatment to you. I am a mom who has watched her children go through oral surgeries and traditional dental solutions to fix weak, poor baby teeth, and I figured that if we treat the rest of our body as if it can heal, why not do the same with teeth? I knew there had to be alternatives, and this is part of what we discovered along the way...
Homemade Toothpaste
*I do not use specific amounts, sorry! I generally just go little by little and continue adding certain ingredients until I have the right amount of paste that I'm looking for.**I grind up any tablets with a mortar and pestel
***This works great for sensitive teeth (confirmed by my husband!) and because it is made of supplements that are taken internally, it is not harmful if swallowed!
- Prebiotics & Oral Probiotics (we use either these or these), tablets ground up
- Cell Salts (calc. fluor, calc. phos, and silicea ), ground up
- A small amount of liquid Selenium
- A bit of xylitol
- A few drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract
Helps remove toxins and remineralize teeth
- Baking Soda
Kills bacteria, whitens teeth
- Depending on who's using it, a drop of peppermint essential oil for flavor
Occasionally I will also add:
- A few drops of liquid Trace Minerals
- A couple of drops of liquid vitamin D and vitamin K
Dental Routine
We brush with our homemade paste first (I still brush for my little ones- my 9 year old brushes on her own, and my 6 year old does it herself occasionally, but teeth are a big deal here, so I try to do it as much as possible, especially if they still have some of those troublesome baby teeth in their mouth). Then I floss their teeth (we like the double stringed flossers, but I also really like the tea tree floss as I find it helps for sensitive spots and for any susceptible areas in between the teeth). We don't "swish" every single day, but when we do I like them to use VITA-MYR Mouthwash, or we put a drop of Mountain Meadow Herbs Oral Care Solution into a bit of water and they use that. (another effective one that my husband and I use, but the kids don't like the taste of anymore, is a single drop of Magnascent Iodine...very effective in killing bacteria (among other things! It's an AWESOME product! You can read my review here) and you swallow it afterwards. Then I will use either a drop of GSE on a Q-tip, or a swab of Ozene (to oxygenate the areas of concern...we have also tried this brand. I LOVE Ozene for many things, especially an essential oil carrier!), and wipe them on the teeth. Afterwards, I pack the areas with decay with some pascalite clay. We finish off our routine by letting the kids suck on an oral probiotic tablet. Repeat process times four, and phew...we are done.
*I will add that there are times when I am unable to make a new batch of toothpaste, or when we are traveling and I don't want to pack it along. For those times, I've really come to like Redmond's Earthpaste.
