Homemade Toothpaste

- Coconut Oil (which not only cleans, but also whitens teeth!)
- Cell salts (calcarea fluorica & silicea are especially beneficial to teeth)
- Baking Soda (cleans teeth and can help balance the pH in the mouth)
- Xylitol (helps fight bacteria and slightly sweetens the paste)
- Essential Oils (for scent/flavor)
- Vitamin K (we cut the capsules open)
- Probiotics (I grind up some mint flavored L. Rueteri tablets)
- I've also started adding in Black Walnut tincture
It's a very simple process, though because I don't measure anything other than the amount of cell salts I use (I use about 5-6 tablets of each, which is for a 1-2 weeks worth of paste). I grind up the cell salts, xylitol, and probiotics in my mortar and pestal (a food processor or coffee grinder would work as well). I dump it in our little bowl, add baking soda and vitamin K, and then add enough coconut oil to make a paste. I usually add 2-3 drops of peppermint essential oil as well!!
There ya go! Healthier teeth are only a few minutes away!!

Thanks for sharing. I can't wait to give it a try. We made home made toothpaste once but it tasted pretty bad.
I'm SO excited about this post! I do NOT like toothpaste for my son, not to mention that it is so wasted all over the sink as he insists on painting, cleaning, and coloring all over with it! WHYYY!?? :)
I LOVE coconut oil and xylitol (also an anti-fungal) and I would LOVE to make our toothpaste. THANK YOU!
And thank you for entering the giveaway at a YES place. Best to you!
Blessings,
Lora
This actually didnt taste too bad when i tried it!!

Wonderful to see you blogging again! You know I am right here with you on this issue. I'll post an update on us soon. Love the idea of making my own! We use a pre-made tooth powder right now, but incorporating cell salts and coconut oil is a great idea! I'd love to know if you think bacteria plays a roll at all (since Ramiel doesn't) and if you sanitize your brushes/how?
Yeah that'd be *role... Lord bless my homeschooled kids! :)
Anjanette,
I do agree with him when he says that "bacteria isn't a primary culprit"...SOME of the time. I do think it certainly contributes to enough of an extent that it's worth fighting! I am not sure if I shared with you the video of the spirochetes in the mouth, and the guy who was doing the microscopy was astounded, and said that with one brushing with baking soda they'd be GONE. Crazy stuff.
Anyway, we occasionally soak our brushes in hydrogen peroxide. Not nearly enough as I'd like, but I just never think about it at the times I get the chance to. LOL At the same time, I don't want to do it too often though, especially once I feel that we have recolonized that oral flora well.
I think this sounds very interesting. I have been trying to go more natural with tooth care, I just use baking soda and I have bought special stuff for my kids but I would love to give this a whirl. It sounds like it might be more kid friendly than just baking soda.
I have never heard of cell salts before- what is it?
Abbi- they are a bio-available form of mineral salts. Here is a link that can probably explain much better than I can:

We actually started my eldest daughter on the salts I mentioned when she was 2 because they were given to us by a naturopathic doctor specifically for her teeth.
I never would have thought to make homeade toothpaste. Thanks!
That sounds like a great toothpaste!
It is so much better to go natural.
Good for you!
Linda
Where do you get the cell salts and what brand do you get. I searched cell salts and I found Kits with 12 different kinds. Which kind do you use for the tooth paste?
We use calcarea fluorica & silicea (they were originally given to us by my daughter's holistic doctor for her teeth). I have gone through several brands of them, but I prefer Unda. You should be able to find them online, and many health food stores carry them.
Why does you MIL use Vitamin K in her toothpaste? Thank you for the recipe!
We have begun using the vitamin K in ours, too, since I now actually have some in the house! ;) The vitamin K helps drive the calcium into the bones. We figured it wouldn't hurt to put it in the toothpaste for that reason (even if it's not designed to work optimally when used topically).
THank you for linking up at Simple Lives Thursday! Great post and pray that the peace of the Lord will overwhelm you through these circumstances. We, as mamas, do our best to bring up our kids as physically healthy as possible... but it is their spiritual health that is most important. I am learning that everyday. Its hard... I know! LOL! I know the Lord will bless you for your diligent to do the best you can in your situation. Hugs!
I am always looking for home made products. They are much less expensive, and sometimes fun to make and use. I LOVE laundry days now because I know I am saving $$$ with every load. I make my own laundry and dish detergent. I am going to start with shampoo and body wash next. And I am going to try your toothpaste recipe.
